Lucifuge Rofocale

The name of the demon known as Lucifuge, or Lucifuge Rofocale originated from the Latin lux fugio [literally, to flee the light] and Rofocale which has been speculated to be a ciphered name from the Goetia, Focalor, another demon that is found within the grimorie known as the Lemegeton1.A grimoire is a book of magic and incantations for demons, angels and spirits.

Lucifuge was described by Honorius [possibly from the 13-15th CE] as the demon in charge under the emperor Lucifer for the government of hell. Within The Book of Honorius is an invocation to summon and make a pact with Lucifuge Rofocale. There are many Christian grimoires that have included the names of Lucifer and Lucifuge within the ranks of hell2.

Other authors have created hierarchies of hell by using ideas of the past, such as within The Book of Ceremonial Magic written by AE Waite. He included a Christian rite to Lucifuge, and a method of pact making with the demon much like the book of Honorius.

The creation of the hierarchies of hell was a literary invention by Christians and Theologians. It is most likely that the interpretations of Lucifer within these books are in direct relation to the Christian legend of the fall of Lucifer and the perceived connection that Lucifer and Satan are the same.

Lucifuge is a demon that was created by authors who wrote grimoires. Lucifer and Lucifuge may sound similar but their origins are quite different. Translated, Lucifer is known as The Light Bringer and Lucifuge is known as He who Flees from the Light.

There is a relation to these two different beings known as Lucifer and Lucifuge. As the name suggests, Lucifer was related throughout mythology as the one who brings the light, and Lucifuge, being the counter-part to Lucifer, would run from the light of day and bring the nightfall. It was an easy transition to create this representative of the evening star of Venus, into a demon of the night.

Lucifer had been demonized in two different ways. Firstly he was stripped of his beauty and power through his association with goddesses of feminine power and beauty [Venus] through literary tales and within the bible. And then, his counterpart, Hesperous, Noctifer, was demonized by changing the meaning of his name from bringer of the night, to Lucifuge the one who flees the light, denying the presence of God.
