  • Is Satanism Legal in America?

    Is Satanism Legal in America?

The question is often asked, is Satanism legal in America? This post explores why and how other religious movements outside of Christianity are questioned as being legal in a land where we have religious freedom.

Satanism became a religion after 1969 when Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan created the first Satanic Church that people could join. Satanism as a religious movement began when the Church of Satan, who laid forth guidelines and philosophy for Satanists in their book, the Satanic Bible, provided a religious and philosophical backdrop for Satanism.

Prior to 1969, there is no documented evidence of any Satanic organizations that promoted Satanism as a religion. You may read about anecdotal evidence claiming that there were hell-fire clubs in the 1800’s or magical orders that claimed to be Satanic. But, there were no established churches with an established doctrine until 1969.

    Providing Legitimacy

Having an established organization along with a doctrine is part of what legitimizes a religion. Without these things we only have hearsay and there is not enough evidence to make a case. Groups that moved away from the social order of the Christian church of the time did not make a special declaration that they were Satanists, nor did they provide a doctrine, set of rituals and rites and call themselves Satanists. The same goes for the Templars, who were only labeled ‘Satanic’ by Philip IV of France, who had owed them money and was not willing to pay, instead killing them and then labeling them as a Satanic order to hide his crime. Being labeled as Satanic by Christians does not make an organization Satanic.

Through this, you can see that throughout time, there had been no established churches related to Satanism. The only thing that existed were labels that were given to groups outside of Christianity, who were labeled as Satanic. This does not provide a legitimate background to establish Satanism as a religion. This, however, changed in 1969 when an actual Satanic organization formed and they provided the public with a doctrine that they themselves established as Satanic.

This happened during a time in America when people were exploring options outside of Christianity. There was a revival of witchcraft, which became known as Wicca in the 1950’s through authors like Gerald Gardner. People were exploring occultism and mysticism so the emergence of an actual Satanic order was not surprising.

    Social Factors

Beyond this one only has to look at the social data provided to us through recent studies done on Satanism. Satanism is comprised mostly of atheistic, nonreligious philosophical followers of Satanic philosophy. In a Satanic survey written in 2001, it was found that most Satanists are adults, some who have college degrees, and are found all throughout the world. This shows that Satanists are an important but small segment of society. While the majority of Satanists claim to be atheists, Satanism today, however, has also developed into a spiritual and theistic practice for many.

On the question of what makes a religion legitimate, one must look at the common factors that all religions share. A religious legitimacy should not be based on the size or number of its followers, nor should it be based on the age or history of its existence. A more reliable measure should be how people have used it in society as a structured belief system.

Most religions provide a place of worship, provide services to the public, and have a doctrine and set of guidelines to follow. They also provide rituals or services for birth, death, and marriage.

While some religions that lie outside the mainstream have their own ways of dealing with this, Satanism is unique in that there are no established public places of worship. However, there are guidelines for ritual or ceremony and for birth, death, and marriage, as provided by the Church of Satan. There are also provided established guidelines and doctrines for Satanism as found in the Satanic Bible. Other groups outside of the Church of Satan provide similar rites and rituals.

In America we have the First Amendment and the Establishment Clause, that bans any law “respecting an establishment of religion”, meaning that while Christians serve as the majority, they can not claim that America must only be Christian. The majority also does not have a right to decide what constitutes a legitimate religion based solely on a moral assessment.

    Guidelines for Establishment

A new religion can also be established through the American government by claiming a tax-exempt status with the IRS. There are certain requirements that enable a religious organization allowance in this case. For the Church of Satan, however, they have claimed to not seek tax-exempt status, stating that “The Church of Satan has never pursued tax-exempt status and challenges all the rest of the world’s churches to stand on their own feet.”

At one time during the 1970’s the Church of Satan had also placed information in the Army’s chaplain Handbook for Satanic Burial rites. While the same information is not available anymore in its recent update, at one time soldiers could be provided with a Satanic burial if they so chose.

More recently there is another Satanic organization that is standing up for our rights as Satanists. The Satanic temple has worked hard to prevent people from being able to say a Christian prayer at public, government-sponsored local meetings. Allowing one group to lead a prayer goes against the establishment of religion involving government activities. They have also placed Satanic-themed holiday decorations in government spaces that were at one time reserved only for Christians.

One of their best accomplishments so far was creating and displaying their own Satanic statue on government grounds in Oklahoma City, the same place where lawmakers decided at one time that it was okay to also display the Ten Commandments. They have also placed Satanic-themed holiday decorations in government spaces that were at one time reserved only for Christians. The government of our nation should not be taking the side of just one religion or any religion at all for that matter.

Now that Satanism has been established for so long the activities of groups like the Satanic temple seek to further legitimize it as a religion as a part of the landscape of America.

The only way that the government can halt the activities of a religious group is if the religious group is involved in criminal activities. Certain cases come to mind when one thinks of the Catholic church and it’s handling of their multi-million dollar payouts that ensued. But since we live in a land of Christian privilege nothing will likely come of it.

Satanism has been an established religion for 48 years and things are not likely to change anytime soon, especially if we have activists that are willing to fight for our rights here in America regarding the establishment, and freedom of religion.

  • Important Women of Satanism – Diane LaVey

Important Women of Satanism – Diane LaVey

    Diane LaVey

I am a Satanist. I also happen to be a woman. Women in Satanism are outnumbered greatly as Satanism is generally, more attractive to males than it is females. There is still a place for us in Satanism though, and throughout the years some very important women have carved out their own niche and helped to create Satanism what it is today.

Today’s post highlights one of the most influential women in Satanism.  Her name is Diane Hegarty but you may know her as Diane LaVey, who was married to Anton LaVey, the founder of modern Satanism. Without her work in Satanism we would not have all the great things we have today.

Diane helped to found the Church of Satan alongside Anton back in the late 60’s. She helped to write and edit many of his books including the Satanic Bible, The Satanic Rituals, The Satanic Witch, and the Devil’s Notebook. These influential books have helped many Satanists throughout the years to discover and work with Satanism in a variety of ways.

Working behind the scenes, she dealt with the press and the media, arranging interviews and administering the duties of the Church. During the Satanic Panic era, Diane stood up for the Church of Satan when the media had questions about Satanism and their role in the allegations and accusations of ritual kidnapping and murders.

She served as high priestess for 25 years, helping the Church of Satan in any way that she could. It is my belief, that without her, the Church of Satan would never have become what it is today, and Anton LaVey would not have had the kind of influence that he had in society. Even still, she let him have the spotlight while she took care of all the essential things that made the Church of Satan what it was.

Diane also spent time taking care of her children, both of which ended up having successful careers in Satanism. Her daughter, Zeena, was the first child to be baptized in a public ritual at the age of three. Later on, Zeena overtook the duties of High Priestess of the Church of Satan, from 1985 to 1990. Zeena also appeared on daytime talk television during the height of the Satanic Panic, defending the Church from the false, politically motivated Christian conspiracies that were the focus of the nation at the time.

Without all the work that Diane LaVey did behind the scenes, Satanism wouldn’t be what it is today. From administering the duties of the church, dealing with public relations, and also helping to write and edit the Satanic Bible, we have a lot to be thankful for in this wonderful woman of Satanism. Today is International Women’s Day so take a moment to appreciate the women in your lives that have helped to make it happen!

  • Satan! Make me Rich (or Popular, or..)

Satan! Make me Rich (or Popular, or..)

Satanic HandshakeSo many letters over the years were sent to me by people from all over the world asking if Satan can make them rich, or popular or famous.

In my experience, life does not work that way. If it were that easy, don’t you think that everyone would be doing it?

The idea is that you can “sell” your soul (something that is not material) in trade for something that is material. I find that most of these letters come from Africa where folks there seem to be a bit behind the times when it comes to Satanism in general. Not only are they dealing with an ongoing Satanic Panic, it seems most of their information about Satanism comes from Christian sources, unfortunately. And we all know that Christians aren’t the most reliable source of information on Satanism. Overall, though I have met people from all around the world who believe they can “just sell their soul to get rich”.

What are some of the common themes behind this myth? First of all, we can go back to the tale of Faust. In this German legend, Faust is a successful scholar who longs for riches and fame. So, he decides to sell his soul to the Devil in return for these gifts. The devil sends his emissary, Mephistopheles to make a bargain with Faust to serve the devil for a set number of years.

Through this tragedy, in the end, Faust is deemed unworthy to enter into heaven and the Devil takes his soul to hell, anyway.  This cautionary tale has been retold many times and usually it shows that it is better not to compromise one’s ethics and morals in return for a quick promise of something that seems to be good. The myth persists however and is greatly misunderstood.

Another thing to consider is that power and wealth are (according to Christians) seen as a marker of evil, and thus, those who are famous and rich must have signed a pact with the devil to get where they are today. Never mind that they might have actual talent or were born into a position that allowed them to become rich and famous; that doesn’t matter, they are in league with Satan.

Take a moment to look up any celebrities name and see that there are conspiracy theorists that think they are in league with the devil. A great example, recently is that Taylor Swift is a biological clone or is posing as Zeena LaVey, daughter of the founder of Satanism, Anton LaVey (see: Is Taylor Swift a Secret Satanist at Hubpages).  Other examples which I find to be quite humorous: “Lil Wayne Satanist” search yielded About 80,600 results;  Rihanna Satanist (also, Princess of the Illuminati!) About 156,000 results; (so-called) Proof that Jimmy Hendrix sold his soul with About 458,000 results;  and finally – “famous musicians that sold their soul”  search yielded About 1,870,000 results on google.
    Deal With the Devil
Satan is not a magic genie that can grant your wishes. Satan isn’t here to cater to your whims. However if you are willing to work hard to get what you want out of life and you decide to align with Satan through a pact it could only benefit you in the long run. It might give you that advantage in life that others don’t have. But such things only come through hard work and dedication and a bit of luck.

And wouldn’t it be easier just to cast a spell for money? You can check out the Luckymojo spell archive for some quick money spells. You might find better results with easier and quicker spells to get results before you cast that spell to win the lottery though! Life has a way of making things complicated so if you cast a spell to win big money then you get into a debilitating accident, you have your 100,000$ at a price of your peace of mind. So be careful what you ask for, my friends.

  • Hiding your Satanic Faith from the Public

Hiding your Satanic Faith from the Public

    Satanic Discrimination
A question was asked in my chatroom and I felt that it was definitely worth further discussion here at my blog:

Q : “Do you hide your faith in front of public to a degree of denying it publicly or do you admit, when others ask?

Great question! I think whether you hide your personal beliefs is a matter of what situation you are in and how it could affect your future. In my case there have been years where I openly wore my pentagram necklace and really had no problems with it. When people asked, I explained that I am Pagan and if they were open to that idea or even knew what it was, then we could possibly have a discussion about Satanism.

Most people’s reactions are surprise. “But you’re such a nice person!” they will say. To that, I reply, “Yes, I’m real. Satanism is real, and its probably not what you think”. If they want to have a discussion beyond that, it’s fine with me. They perhaps do not realize that Satanists come from all walks of life, you never know when you’ll meet one!

I wear a pentagram tattoo on the back of my neck that I had done back in 2003; I am proud to wear it and it is in the kind of place that I can hide it if chose to, but I don’t always hide it.

In all its a good idea not to let people know too much about your business. All though you may be a proud Satanist there is far too much prejudice in the world, even in the United States where we have (supposed) freedom of religion.

Consider how hard it has been for Wiccans and Pagans to be public with their religion, and how they have had to fight just to gain a small portion of acceptance in society. It is this way because Satanism and other religions like it are in the minority and minority religions will always be excluded from popular acceptance. It’s unfortunate but that’s just how things are.

For further research I would like to direct you to two sources that you can read, so you can decide for yourself if coming out is the right thing to do for you.

  • On Leaving Christianity, Reader Q & A

    On Leaving Christianity, Reader Q & A

Infernal Greetings! Today’s Satanism question sent to me by email comes from a person named “Q” who asks:

    Leaving Christianity for Good

“I became a Satanist but then I had a relapse into Christianity. I want to find a way to keep Satan in my life and I hope that you had some advice on leaving Christianity. Any advice that you could give I would greatly appreciate…

A very appropriate question for this time of year, when people are trying to live their lives in a better way because of the new year.

It’s a question I get asked often, so I would like to share it here on the Spiritual Satanist blog. Quite some time ago, I had written an article on my Spiritual Satanist site addressing this topic, My Advice on Leaving Christianity, where I discuss the methods that can be used to leave your former religion.

Also, there is a supplemental video on YouTube, “Satanic Black Mass”, describing what happens at a black mass and the usefulness of this ritual for those leaving Christianity. Hopefully these resources may help to give some insight.

People leave Christianity for various reasons. Some are disenchanted with the religion. Others had suffered abuse, and still other seek freedom from the limitations that Christianity provides. One of the things that i recommend is to do a personal ritual that will enable you to let go of your past. This ritual is called a Black Mass, and essentially it allows you to mock, or destroy your beliefs in your former religion. It is necessary to deconstruct something like this so that you can understand why it is important to leave it behind. Once you see it in a ridiculous or useless light it may open your eyes and allow you to step away.

An example of the Black Mass can be found in the Satanic Bible (At Left Hand Path Books site), where it is presented as an inversion of the Catholic mass. The Black Mass serves as a cleansing from your former religion allowing you to move forward. Until you can reconcile this you may be tempted to return out of fear, guilt or obligation. Getting rid of the old will enable you to welcome the new.

Satanism is not an easy path, and it is difficult because much of what you will do in it you will have to do on your own. Nothing good ever came from anything that was easy and Christianity may seem like the easy way out because it is familiar. That familiarity makes you want to not even try, to go back to your old ways where you were comfortable because you knew what to expect.

I suspect that the reader, “Q” is a religious kind of person, so taking a religious approach may help as well. It would be wise to set up a time and place to have private, spiritual communion with Satan on a daily basis. Perhaps some sort of shrine or altar, something simple to start out with, can be your focus.

Even if it is something as simple as having a photograph in a frame and a candle to light or incense to burn while you commune with Satan can be beneficial. It will give you a focus that is planted here in the material world. Take some time to get to know the character and nature of Satan. This can be done by spending time daily reading about Satanic legends. There are many stories that tap into the primal dark force that can relate to Satan, and learning from these may enable you to facilitate a better relationship with Satan. Knowledge will liberate your mind and soul.

Make yourself familiar with these things and you will find that you are creating your own path in Satanism and in time, this will be a familiar and welcome thing. Until you are able to completely walk away from your former religion you may be tempted to return. You must be honest with yourself and strip away any pretense.

Take some time to examine why you feel tempted to return to your former religion, but at the same time, take note of why you were unhappy to begin with. If the cons outweigh the pros, then it makes no sense to go back to something that isn’t benefiting you. If what you seek is happiness then work towards those goals. Take the time to know why you want to return to Satanism.

Write these things down in a book and refer to them when you feel uncertain. It seems simple but just the act of writing it out can be a useful exercise that will help to cement these ideas. In dealing with guilt and fear left over by a former religion, one must realize that guilt and fear are the things that motivate people into submission. It is a tool of the religious to keep people within the fold, to guide people into behaving in certain ways.

And in leaving this behind you will find a new freedom that nothing can match. But first you must rid yourself of the past in order to be able to move on, and you also should establish new habits that will help you to stay on track.

    Blessed Beast!
    Best Wishes in 2017,
    Venus Satanas

  • Winter Solstice is Upon Us! December 21st

Winter Solstice is Upon Us! December 21st

Winter SolsticeFor those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, Winter Solstice is upon us! Today is the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest period of darkness.

From my article, Holidays in Satanism Winter Solstice, 22nd: During this time the earth enters a slumber and winter sets in, reminding us of the cycle of life and death that we experience all around us every day. In this we are reminded of Belial and its planetary counterpart, Saturn, and south to the earth below us, reflecting on the necessity of endings for a new beginning to occur.

Because this day is associated with the shortest day it had often been associated with gods of death and darkness. From here, we can look forward to Sol Invictus  (“The Unconquered Sun”) on December 25th, a Roman holiday that was conveniently adopted and then commercialized by Christians.

Without endings there can be no new beginnings and without beginnings there can be no endings. Take this time to celebrate by reflecting on this year and its closing, and also take time to let go of the things that no longer benefit you. Tonight I’m going out to celebrate!

  • Commentary on the Guardian Demon

    Commentary on the Guardian Demon

    Guardian Demon

The Guardian Demon is a concept that is discussed in Satanism at times. I have had folks ask me to help them to contact their own personal guardian, or ask me how to work with them. It must be that those who promote the idea of a guardian demon are conveniently seeking to lay the responsibility of teaching spirituality on something else rather than taking the time to aid you in a personal way.

The concept of the Guardian Demon in Satanism suggests that a demon can help you to learn spell working and magic, that it can help you with psychic or spiritual abilities – but these are the things that you could (and should) be pursuing on your own without the aid of some demon. There is no easy way to take on a spiritual path and to change your life in a spiritual way, and to suggest that all you have to do is contact a demon to magically do all these things for you is ridiculous.

Generally, demons are not teachers who will aid you with these things. In fact, learning how to perform magic or do other spiritual activities should be something that you  learn on your own so that you have the necessary experience to actually summon a demon. Without this experience, you can not effectively or accurately communicate with the divine.

The concept of the guardian demon is something that was borrowed, quite incorrectly from the teachings of Aleister Crowley and the practice of Ceremonial Magick. In this system, the divine force of inner will is known as the “Holy Guardian Angel”. To assume that Satanists must copy this idea and reverse it, shows a lack of understanding of the methods of attaining conversation with one’s Holy Guardian Angel. It misses the mark entirely, making such ideas a waste of time.

There is no easy way out when it comes to learning how to do magic, or how to live a more spiritual life. It takes time and effort and dedication to one’s path. Lets face it, demons never have been, nor ever will be a personal guru. They are also not magic genies to ask wishes from. There is no spiritual being out there that will aid you in what you must do on your own.  If that seems daunting – it should. Spiritual attainment is a life-long journey that at times may feel that it may never be complete.

Venus Satanas is, quickly becoming, a very popular Independent Satanist. She has a website, a blog, and most glaring, a youtube channel with over 2 thousand subscribers. She is currently very active on youtube, as well as has just put out a very interesting book about the Al-Jilwah not to mention has made her popular youtube videos available in DVD format. She’s even created an organization for Independent Satanists. In my opinion, her views and mine might conflict sometimes but I view her as a shining star of intelligent and careful thinking. Someone that could quite possibly make a very serious, real dent in the occult world in the future, if not now.

Below you will find links to her online projects as well as a interview. Enjoy!

    01. Who are you? What do you do? Please be specific as possible for this interview’s progress.

    Who Am I?
I would like to say that I am so glad to do this interview with you. I am Venus Satanas, and I am a spiritual Satanist. I have been a satanist since 1992, when i created a self-dedication pact with Satan. I was never raised in a christian home, so the acceptance of Satan had little to do with the rejection of Christianity. The dark side appealed to me, so i responded to it. I feel as if Satanism has been the perfect path for me, it has allowed me to achieve what I have wanted over the years.

In 2004, I decided to create a website, “Theistic Satanism and Magick”, a place where I could write about my experiences, and research topics related to Satanism, magic and the Occult. After a few years, the success of my website prompted me to create a channel on youtube, and now i have over two thousand subscribers, in the past two years. The response has been really good; but still, I am surprised that so many people are interested in Satanism.

I have never sought to join a group or organization. I think that organizations are great for some people, but I do my best work when I am solitary, when I am able to challenge myself. In the spirit of independence, I collaborated with a good friend of mine, and long time satanist, nocTifer in 2007. We created the Horde of Independent Satanist, a group for discussion on magic, satanism and the occult, among other independent satanists. We feel that nothing like this has been done before, as most groups try to get their members to follow one certain path. With HISS, we are a group of peers who have independent goals but we meet so that we can share ideas and discuss what is really important in satanism.

So, i suppose when you ask, who am I and what is my purpose, I can say that I am Satanist who is interested in furthering the education of satanists through my writing and through interaction with whomever is interested in learning.

    02. What makes one a ‘Spiritual Satanist?’ How does the Satanism you identify with differ from other brands of Satanism?

Spiritual Satanism is a spiritual appreciation of life, it is living in a spiritual existence, as compared to other forms of atheistic satanism that may only embrace a central belief in materialism. I like to think that the spiritual Satanist has the opportunity to experience the best of both worlds by appreciating both the spiritual and physical. For some this may be done through worship or other [metaphysical] activities that bring the Satanist closer to their goals and desires.

Also some Satanists who only identify with atheism use magic in a non-esoteric way, as a psychological approach where as some other, more spiritual satanist may identify the more arcane and spiritual aspects of magic.

    03. What does Satan mean to you? Is he an actual Being? Myth? Your senses? The hidden part of your mind? What does Satan mean to you and what do you mean to Satan? I’ve heard you wrote a
pact with him. Does this means he’s very real, substantial to you? A real live spirit? Or simply, as Anton Lavey put it, a metaphor?

I do not think that LaVey’s descriptions of Satan were simply as metaphor. He used examples throughout the satanic bible to illustrate the many different aspects of Satan, either as a god or as a symbol of human nature. To me Satan is one of many gods who were created by humans over a long period of time, and he represented different things throughout the ages. My pact with Satan established my identity as a satanist and ensured my loyalty to satanism.

    04. What would you do if another Satanic Panic broke out in the media and America? Would you remain quiet or would you try to take action against the ignorance of Satanism out there?

Wow! That would be something! I wouldn’t hide. I would continue my work to educate whoever is interested in my ideas on satanism. Their scaremongering tactics have no effect. With the freedom of information that is available now, and the world wide access to the net that many people who are Satanic have, i doubt that much would come from their attempts. Christians should fear the atheist movement even more as they pose a real danger to the foundations of their theistic beliefs.

    05. What is your favorite Sin, and why is it soo important to you? Has it brought your life much pleasure? Do you ever get “too much of a good thing” with it? Can the Christian Sins we love to embrace ever grow old, too common place or just misplaced?

I do not have a favorite sin. Sin is not a part of my everyday living. I think the need to label activities and feelings as sin comes from attaching moral values to personal actions. As a satanist I am responsible for my own actions and myself, therefore I am in debt to nothing or no one for moral sins. I do agree that a balance is a good thing. We should seek to enjoy life without giving into reckless abandon that could potentially shorten our days on this earth.

As the moral values of a society change so do their views on what they consider to be taboo. So I do not believe the same ideas of sin that are common now, were common fifty years ago in America.

    06. Please explain, if you could, one example of both: Greater and Lesser magic working for you in your life.

For me, greater magic is ritual magic. it is a method of performing magic by using specific rituals that include gods or demons as an aid to influence the potential outcome. You could say that when I initiated my friend Angie into Witchcraft, and we both called upon the Goddess Athena in her favor, that we performed Greater ritual magic. My summoning experiences were a form of ritual magic that I developed to work with demons.

Lesser magic is the use of various spells; often these things are connected with simple magic, folk magic, talismans, etc. My most recent spell of this kind was a spell to ease the tension at my house between my cats. I have four of them and one of them used to fight with the other three. the tension was so bad at my house because of this that i decided to do something about it and cast a spell. I used candle magic to influence the outcome and it worked for me. Within a week the cat that would fight with the others slept next to the one that he fought with last week.

During the next month he slept next to the other cats, each in turn. This was something that I had waited for, for five years. My candle spell had eased the situation and made him willing to give in and accept the others into his life. It was wonderful! Now i have a peaceful home and I can thank some creative magic for this very beneficial outcome. A simple form of magic provided me with a solution to a very complex and ongoing issue. As you can see, the benefits of greater and lesser magic have their uses.

The Familiar Spirit and It’s Role in Satanism

Today’s topic is an exploration of the familiar spirit in magic. A familiar is an animal that is more than just a pet; it is a companion in a spiritual and physical way that can protect you, comfort you, guide you and teach you in the ways of magic.

Although it is not necessary to have a familiar to be successful in magic or witchcraft, having one will enable you to add an extra layer in your practices.
Familiars aren’t often discussed in the context of Satanic magic or witchcraft. There is a feeling among Satanists in general that the practice of having a familiar belongs to the realm of paganism or Wicca. This is a misconception, because those that discount this kind of experience in their magic or witchcraft are missing out on the many benefits that having a familiar can bring. Satanism has no such rules or boundaries that apply to all Satanists.

The cat is the most often chosen of these animals, for several reasons. Cats have an ancient history of being related to magic and the spirit world. It was the cat of ancient Egypt that was so revered that they had their own temples and were worshiped as gods. Cats have served their role in humanity by being protectors of our food sources, and were at one time a very important part of society. It wasn’t until much later in medieval times that cats (and black cats in general) became a symbol of the underworld. Cats were associated with witches as a liaison of the devil because of their nocturnal nature.

With all of this, during the era of the witchcraft trials, cats were hunted and killed alongside the innocents of the era. They became messengers of evil, smothering babies in their cribs in an age where people didn’t realize that cats just want a warm place to sleep. They became harbingers of death and misfortune. It is for this very reason that the black plague was able to spread so quickly. You see, cats being the hunters that they are, were able to keep the disease spreading populations of rats in check. Without the aid of cats, the rats of Europe were able to spread the plague quite readily. In their panic and fear of the unknown, cats were demonized not only for their past association with gods but for their nocturnal nature that must have seemed quite unnatural to humans in that age.Interviews

It is from this era that the idea of a familiar spirit that can aid a witch or magician developed. From its history it has changed into something wonderful that anyone of any path can tap into for its benefits. A familiar can be any kind of animal or creature that can aid you in bringing you closer to nature and the spiritual world. The idea of a familiar animal or creature can be felt in the best way when you are able to relate to that animal or creature in a personal way.

For example, I have a friend who is saving her money so that she can have a snake for a familiar. I know another person who has a spider for theirs. And its not unheard of to have a pet rat, ferret, rabbit, dog, or any kind of animal whether it is domesticated or not. A familiar will have a kinship with you that is deeper than just a pet and its owner can experience.

For instance, my familiar appears in my dreams at times and guides me in certain situations, enabling me to learn from him in a special and very spiritual way. My cat who is still very much a kitten at this stage, will be my guardian who will protect me by deflecting any harmful magic sent my way. He can join me in rituals and magic, with his presence allowing me to be drawn closer to the animal spirit and nature itself. He is my bridge between the physical and the spiritual in this way, acting as a gateway into the spirit world.

Animals are uncomplicated and feel emotions in a much purer way than humans do. They do not create prejudices in their minds, they love unconditionally, and they are able to feel the ‘spirit’ of a situation in a natural way. Other familiars I have had in the past were so close to me, that they had their own spot on my altar just for them. I have done magic with them, and on them.

I could tell many stories of how they helped me in rituals, and how they warned me about situations, and how I learned how to be closer to nature through them. They have made my life with magic and witchcraft so much richer! And what better way for Satanists, who generally gravitate towards earthly things than to have a special relationship with something that is so close to nature.
